Posted 8pm - Moto two did not fair well at all for BBMX rider Ben Lamay.  After a mid pack start, Ben would crash hard 3/4 of the way into moto two, ending his day.  Ben was riding as high up as 21st before he crashed hard on the rough Hangtown track.  While the crash was hard and ended his day, Ben is doing good and will be back in action next weekend in Texas.  With a 23-33 finish, Ben took 28th overall for the day.

In the 250s, Ryan Dungey would take the moto2  win, but Christophe Pourcel would take the overall for the day with a 1-3 on the day. Trey Canard would finish 2nd overall with a score of 3-2 and Ryan Dungey rounds out the podium in 3rd overall with a 7-1 score.  In the 450s, Josh Grant took the moto2 win, but Mike Alessi takes the overall with a 1-2 finish, Ivan Tedesco takes a well deserved 2nd overall with a 2-4 finish and Chad Reed rounds out the podium with a 6-3 finish.

As the team packs up, the series leaves California and heads south to Texas for the Freestone Classic Outdoor National next weekend.  Be sure to log in to www.butlerbrothersmx.com for the Freestone race day blog next weekend for all the news on the BBMX team and the action on the track.

In the 250 class, Christophe Pourcell hunted down Justin Barcia to take the win in the 250 moto one..  Barcia would lead all but the last 2 laps of the race, when Pourcell took over the lead.
In the 450 class, Mike Alessi overcame a first lap crash to catch Ivan Tedesco and retake the lead for the moto win, with Tedesco in second and Andrew Short in third.  Last Weekend's winner Ryan Villopoto finished 17th, after going down in the first turn. Chad Reed would finsih in the 6th position and Josh Grant finished 9th.

Updated 12:30 - With qualifying and LCQs done, BBMX rider Ben Lamay has qualified in the field for the motos today here at Hangtown.  The other two BBMX riders had a tough practice sessions and had to ride the LCQ, where they did not qualify out.  Kyle Keylon did get close, finishing 3rd in the LCQ, one spot away from making it in.  JT$ just could not get going today crashing hard in practice and finished way in the pack of the LCQ riding injured.  Tough break for 2/3 of the BBMX trio, but look for them to bouce back in Texas next weekend.

As the team gets Ben's bike ready, the first motos are set to get underway around 1pm.  Be sure to check out the first motos live on the internet at

Round two of the Lucas Oil AMA Outdoor Motocross championship stops this weekend just outside California's state capital at the Hangtown motocross facility.  Hangtown will be a different type of track, as there isn't huge hills for the riders to face and the soil isn't as soft.  The BBMX riders are all ready to tackle the Hangtown facility.

Jason Thomas is ready to better his ride from last weekend, as he gets into the swing of things in the Outdoors.  Compared to Glen Helen, Hangtown is like a "resort" JT says, referring to the night and day differences in the tracks.  Look for JT$ to earn that money sign today here at Hangtown.

Kyle Keylon is also looking forward to the Hangtown facility, as last weekend's race a Glen Helen was a forgettable one for him. Look for Kyle to get better starts today and be running up in the front of the pack.  Kyle had put in some good sessions this week at his test track back home and is looking forward to revving up here at Hangtown.

This weekend is redemption for Ben Lamay.  Ben did not have the greatest of weekends at Glen Helen last weekend, going through two motors in the same amount of practices and not making the afternoon motos.  It was a forgettable weekend for Ben, who said it was the "WORST" weekend of his career.  Look for Ben to come back strong this weekend in Hangtown, as he celebrates a birthday, turning the ripe age of 18.

The Hangtown track is much different than the soft soil of the Glen Helen facility, but snakes up and down the hilly terrain.  Below is the Hangtown track layout.

Jason Thomas finished 27th in Moto one at Glen Helen.

San Bernardino, CA-
The great outdoors started out with a whiz-bang for the DNA Energy Drink/BTO Sports.com/BBMX team as the team was enthused about the new era of American motocross happening right before their eyes. In front of, well we’re not sure but it looked like a crapload, people team riders Jason “Solar Radar” Thomas, Kyle “St Pete for life” Keylon and Ben “mush, mush” Lamay all battled hard, sweated out blood and tears and gave it their all on their mighty CRF450’s. Unfortunately, Lamay didn’t make the motos but we still love him anyways and expect to see him in their soon. In Ben's defense, a rock to his motor cases in the 1st timed practice and a seized motor in the 2nd practice left the kid just about helpless with qualifying.   Solar Radar Thomas suffered horrible starts as did Keylon but the two warriors tried their best in the whole race. They scored somewhere between 20th and 40th but we’re not concerned with position as long as the guys try really, really hard. Top ten would be nice however.  The guys didn’t score any points but both riders admit that they aren’t going to exchange any x-mas cards with Glen Helen anytime soon. It can only get better as we go to the famous Hangtown facility in Sacramento this weekend.  Too bad they don't still have a national at Gatorback in FL!  If they did, just out of curiosity, we wonder if just about 75% of the riders in the main event would be from FL?

Posted 10pm - Moto two for the BBMX riders didn't turn out as planned, as Jason Thomas fell in the back section of the track on the first lap, having to ride hard to catch the pack and battle his way to 26th place, bettering his first moto finish of 27th. BBMX teammate Kyle Keylon had a better second moto, as he had a good start and ran the first part of the moto in the 19th position.  Kyle would eventually fade and finish behind teammate Jason Thomas in 27th place.

"I felt good out there...after I fell.  I just fell over in the back section, just my fault.  The bike felt great and caught the pack quickly.  The track was good today, even for the second moto" said JT after the 450 moto two.

The second moto for the 450s saw Mike Alessi grab the holeshot and hold the lead for 3/4 of the race until Ryan Villopoto chopped away Alessi's 16 second lead to take the lead with about 10 minutes to go in the moto.  Villopoto would take the overall, with Mike Alessi taking second and Josh Grant rounds out the podium in the third overall.

The second 250 moto would see Ryan Dungey battle newcommer Tyla Rattray and Justin Barcia to take the 250 second moto win.  Tyla Rattray and Justin Barcia rounded out the the top three for moto two.  Dungey would take the Overall, with Christophe Pourcel second overall and Tyla Rattray rounding out the podium third overall.

While Glen Helen was not the best of days for the DNA energy drink/BTOsports.com/BBMX team, the second moto shows promise for better motos ahead.  As the team packed up into the night, the MX sports/AMA Outdoor National Championship heads up to northern California and Hangtown motocross facility for round #2 next week.  Glen Helen is in the books, so be sure to log into www.butlerbrothersmx.com next weekend for our Hangtown Race Day Blog.

Moto one saw BBMX rider Jason Thomas finish in the the 27th position after moving up from a back of the pack start.  Kyle Keylon had a tough first moto, as he tangled with a few riders in the first lap and struggled in the back of the pack, finally pulling off to save the equipment.

In the front of the pack, the battle was between early race leader Josh Grant and Ryan Villopoto.  Mike Alessi grabbed the holeshot and had the lead for the first lap until Josh Grant took the lead with Villopoto in tow.  Alessi would finish in 3rd for moto one, followed by teammate Chad Reed.  Reed battled back after a mid pack start, first battling with Davi Millsaps then Andrew Short to take 4th.

In the 250 class, the front was a battle between early race leader Justin Barcia, Trey Canard, Christophe Pourcel and Ryan Dungey.  Barcia kept the lead for half the race, while Canard and Pourcel and Dungey traded second place.  Pourcel finally caught and passed Barcia, and on the next lap Canard and Dungey made their way past Barcia, who faded back to 9th place. Final order would be Christophe Pourcel, Ryan Dungey and Trey Canard.

BBMX rider Ben Lamay has had a rough morning here at Glen Helen.  Having bike issues both practice sessions, Lamay had to ride the 450 consolidation race.  Lamay had a good start and rounded talledega corner in 3rd, but by the time the field came down Shoei hill, Lamay would fall back to 8th place.  Lamay would have issues in the back part of the track and end up in 22nd spot, thus ending his day.

BBMX riders Kyle Keylon and Jason Thomas are firmly in the field, sitting in 34th and 35th.
JT is feeling good today and is liking the track, saying "it is working in nicely and should be fast this afternoon."  Keylon is feeling really good after his two fast practice sessions, also saying the track is going to be fast this afternoon. The 450s are set to go off at 1pm
this afternoon
.

With the first practice session finished for both the 450 and 250s, the BBMX rider Jason Thomas and Kyle Keylon got their first taste of the whole track this morning.  Ben Lamay went out in first practice, but bike issues kept him from doing more than one lap.  Ben's mechanic, Josh Marsh is working hard to get Ben's bike ready for practice session two coming up around 10:30am.  Below are a few shots from this morning's practice session.

The opening round of the AMA/Lucas Oil Outdoor Motocross Nationals is set to get underway here at the famed Glen Helen raceway park in southern California.  It's been a busy two weeks since the end of the Supercross season, with the DNA Energy Drink/BTOsports.com/BBMX team testing hard to get ready for this weekend.

Ben Lamay setting up his bike before press day, Glen Helen 09
Ben Lamay has been pounding out the laps at the Glen Helen facility during the break to not only get familiar with his CRF450 race bike, but to get used to the track and the warm socal weather. It looks likes all that testing during the break did him good, as Ben was very fast during press day yesterday afternoon.
"I feel good and am ready for the nationals.  I love Glen Helen, the rougher the better" , says an excited Lamay.

Jason Thomas blasts through a deep rut during Glen Helen 09 Press day.
Jason Thomas has also had a busy two weeks since Supercross ended.  He has been testing back home in Florida to get ready for the opening round here at Glen Helen. JT will be riding in the 450 class alongside his teammates Lamay and Keylon.
"While the track was rough for press day, the track looks like it will be really good for race day.  I can't wait", JT said after press day yesterday.

Rouning out the BBMX team for the outdoors is Kyle Keylon.  Kyle has also been testing hard during the break and is very excitied about riding the 450 this summer.  Kyle is relaxed and is looking forward to the rough Glen Helen track this weekend.
"It's ON", exclaimed a excited Kyle.

The Glen Helen track looks to be a very rough and tough track.  The Jody Weisel designed track will test the riders abilities and endurance. Weather looks to be very good today, with temps in the mid 80s.  Click on the map above to see the track at full view.

Practice is set to get underway here at 8:30am with the BBMX trio taking to the track.  Be sure to check back at www.butlerbrothersmx.com throughout the day for race reports from the BBMX semi.

BBMX riders Jason Thomas, Ben Lamay and Kyle Keylon all took to the Glen Helen track this afternoon for Glen Helen's Press day.  Both the 250s and the 450s were given 15 minutes of practice time on the beat Glen Helen track after the conclusion of the Amateur day racing.  While they did not ride the full national track, the riders were able to ride about 3/4 of the track.

Ben Lamay looked very comfortable on the Glen Helen track, and he should be.  He is the only rider on the BBMX squad that has spent many days here at Glen Helen testing in the past.  Jason Thomas looked to be in good form as he circled around the Glen Helen track.  Kyle Keylon was on the gas as well, but didn't feel as comfortable as the other riders on the rough track.

All three BBMX riders will be competing in the 450 class outdoors this season.  Practice starts tomorrow at 8:30 sharp, and all three BBMX riders will be on the track first thing tomorrow morning.

If you haven't been keeping up, this year's nationals will be heald on Saturdays instead of the Sundays as they were in the past.  Also, there are no more mandetory side numbers, as they are replaced with 3/4 of the side plates filled with sponsor logos.  The numbers are still there, but have been reduced in size to make room for the sponsors.

BBMX Team Review:

Smith goggles can be described in many words, but we would use outstanding! It is without a doubt one of the best products our team has had the privilege to work with, in our five years as a race team. "The quality is unmatched, I have worn almost every goggle company throughout my amateur and pro career and I can easily say that Smith is one of the best. I have always had a tremendous sweating problem during the long motos, but the new F.A.T. foam system keeps the sweat out of my eyes, and that's hard to do 30 minutes into a moto." say BBMX team rider, Bryan Johnson. Probably the most frequent response we hear from the riders, is that the comfort and fit of the Smith goggle is amazing. The technology, testing and research that goes into their goggles is amazing. We have had absolutely zero problems with fogging, sweating or any other issues with the new Smith goggles, they make a great quality product. The new 2009 graphics series, that Smith offers, has gotten a tremendous response at the track, our riders love them and the response from the fans has be outrageous! We would highly recommend, that if your in the market for some top quality eye protection, Smith is the choice for you. The Smith Fuel Series goggle has been race proven by BBMX for sure!

BBMX Team Review:

The ASV Solo Sag Scale is something that race teams like us have been waiting a long time for. Its an unbelievable idea and ASV put it together perfect, it saves time and effort for the mechanics. "Its easily the coolest, most efficient tool I've come across in the last few years. It makes it so easy to adjust the sag quickly, and when were on the track and my rider only has 15 mins to get the bike dialed and the track down, that time becomes very valuable." says Jarrod Johnsgaard, BBMX Chief Mechanic. Its very practical for the mechanics, it compacts down to about the size of a ruler, so they can just stuff it in their tool packs and take it out to practice. I guess one of the best features, is that our riders can even use it alone. As a privateer race team, our riders don't always have a mechanic with them practicing every day, so we make sure all of our riders have one, so they can dial in their sag when they are alone. Its an awesome all around product that makes setting your sag simple, wether on race day or by yourself. The ASV Solo Sag Scale has been race proven by BBMX for sure!

JT finished 9th to take a spot in the 450 main event in Vegas where he would finish 11th.
JT on his way to an 11th in the main at Vegas.  Photo: Chris Weedon

Las Vegas, NV- The exciting final round of the AMA Supercross series was in Las Vegas and although there was a championship officially awarded to James Stewart, we’d like to award our riders the “Good Job Guys, We Love You” award for Supercross excellence. Team riders Jason “Gnome Life” Thomas, Kyle “Too Tall” Keylon, Shaun “Mr Skin” Skinner, Bryan “Don” Johnson and Ben “Mush” Lamay all rode their hearts out this season (well, the last three races for Lamay) and we’d like to thank them for this.

As far as Vegas the race goes, Thomas picked it up and had his best placing of the season in the 450’s. The hard packed slick Vegas track agreed with the diminutive Thomas and he raced his way to an eleventh in the 450 main event. This was very impressive but we couldn’t get a comment from JT as he was off to go play some blackjack paddywack in some casino immediately afterwards. Keylon after flying in practice, went from last to 9th (the final transfer spot) on lap 4 and then hit the dirt. In the LCQ, a bad start, 4 laps and 8 east/west shootout factory support riders racing for 2 spots ended his night early. Lamay came up just one spot short in his heat race & two positions short in the 450 LCQ from making his first career 450 main. Ben got his first Lites main event of his SX career with the team in Salt Lake and almost nabbed his first 450 main in Vegas.

“All the guys rode great all year and we worked our asses off all season. I’d like to thank each and every sponsor, the mechanics, the truck driver the riders” said Team Manager Forrest Butler as he gave everyone a DNA Energy Drink shower from the top of the semi. He was muttering something about being a golden god but we stopped paying attention. On to the great outdoors!!

The AMA Supercross series rolls into Sin City this weekend for the 17th and final round of the 2009 supercross season.  It has been a fast and exciting 16 weeks of racing and it is all ready to finish up here in the desert at Sam Boyd Stadium.  The Vegas round has always had it's share of fireworks associated with it, from Doug Henry to be the first person in SX history to win on a four stroke back in 1997, to the many battles in the East vs West Lites shootout.  This year may have the most anticipation to a season end in a long time, with the 450 championship battle between James Stewart and Chad Reed coming down to the last round.  It is sure to be one of the best Vegas rounds in the past couple years.

The DNA Energy Drink/BTOsports.com/BBMX team also comes into Vegas running strong.  Ben  Lamay is coming off his first main event in is SX career in Salt Last weekend.  Benji, as he is known in the pit area, is fitting in quite well here in the BBMX pits.  He has shown that he also has talents beyond the bike, as the white board in the BBMX semi is graced with Benji's artwork.

Ben Lamay's artistic skills. Vegas 2009.
Lamay's artistic style in the BBMX semi.

Ben will finish off the Supercross series riding in the 450 class this weekend here in Vegas, as he did not have enough points in the Lite class to race the East -vs-West shootout.  He is looking forward to riding the bigger bike, as it will give him an early jumpstart on testing for the Outdoor Nationals where he will be on the 450s full time starting at Glen Helen in a few weeks.

Jason Thomas will also be back on his DNA Energy Drink/BTOsports.com/BBMX CRF450 here in Vegas this weekend.  JT$ is already looking past supercross and is ready for the Outdoors to start as JT will be on the 450 all summer along with Lamay.  "It's party time" JT says referring to the Vegas Supercross. Vegas is always a fun round for the riders as it is the end of a long supercross season.

Kyle Keylon will take a break from his attack on the 450s to mix it up in the Lites East -vs- West showdown.  Kyle finished in the top 20 in the Lites east championship this season, which makes him eligible for the Vegas showdown.  He is excited about taking on the West coast lites riders here in Vegas to show that he is a force no matter what coast he is on. East, West, it doesn't matter to Kyle, he will roost on any coast.  Kyle is also ready for the outdoor season to start up.
Kyle will join both Ben and JT in the 450 class all summer.

The graphics on the DNA Energy Drink/BTOsports.com/BBMX race bikes are special this weekend due to being Vegas.  The traditional DNA energy yellow has been changed to a more lime green in an effort to match the bright green Fly Racing gear that the riders will be wearing all day here in Vegas.

As the 2009 Supercross series comes to a close, the Outdoor Nationals are right around the corner with the Glen Helen opening round kicks off memorial day weekend, May 23.  This year the nationals are on Saturdays, much like Supercross.  No more two day events this summer.  The one day format should prove to be even more exciting than the old two day format as it will pack in the practices, qualifiers and the mains on one day.

The Vegas track looks to be a good technical track.  The sand section makes a return, though the rest of the track usually gets hard packed, dry and blue grooved as the night progresses.

For more Las Vegas track notes, click here...

The weather here is beautiful and sunny, warming up to the mid 90s today.  There are scattered high clouds in the sky and a light breeze as of 8:30am, but no thunderstorms.  You can defiantly feel the moisture in the air though.  Practice gets underway at 12:30pm here in Vegas, so be sure to log back in for all the happenings from the team on and off the track.

Updated 12:pm -  As track walk and riders meeting comes to a close, practice session is set to get under way here in 20 min.  The track has a few tricky sections, but the trickiest part of the track is the dirt itself.  The rocky desert soil is hard packed and filled with good sized rocks.  It is typical desert soil and will get dry and baked no matter how much water is put down.  Check out a few track photos below from track walk.

With practice sessione one over, BBMX riders Kyle Keylon, Jason Thomas and Ben Lamay are sitting pretty in the field.  Kyle Keylon is in the 34th spot in the combined East/West shootout field.  Keylon is looking good, even though he is feeling a little under the weather.  Jason Thomas looks aggressive out there in the session and is in the 19th position.  Ben Lamay is riding well as he is in the 22nd spot.  The mechanics will get the bikes ready for the second practice session coming up in a half hour.

Ryan Dungey and James Stewart are at the top of the list for thier classes.  Dungey looks to be in good form and is 0.5 quicker East coast rider Austin Stroupe.  James pulled a fast lap at the end of the session to take over the top spot from Chad Reed.

Updated 5pm - With practice session two done, the field is set for tonight's race, the final round of the AMA supercross series.  The BBMX squad is in the field with Kyle Keylon 26th in the East -vs- West lites showdown.  Both Jason Thomas and Ben Lamay are in the 450 field comfortably, 20th and 22nd.

Ryan Dungey and James Stewart hold on for the top spots for tonight's races. The track is proving to be a bit tricky in a few spots as some of the top riders have gone down.  Austin Stroupe went down twice in the second session, and James Stewart went down in the first session.

Updated 11:30pm -
The BBMX riders had an up and down night.  Kyle Keylon had a mid pack start, and was moving up to a transfer spot when he tangled with a rider on the 4th lap.  Kyle would finish his heat out of a transfer sopt in 19th and would have to goto the LCQ.  He would get a good start in the LCQ, but would not finish in the a transfer spot as he finished 16th, ending his night.

In the 450s, Ben Lamay would battle a mid pack start, but work his way up to 10th in his heat.  Still not a transfr spot though as he went to the LCQ where he would get a decent start, but again come up short as he finished 4th and out of a transfer spot.  He would not make the main tonight.
Jason Thomas would ride well tonight, as he would finish 9th in his heat for a transfer spot to the main.  JT$ would ride hard and aggressive all race long, finishing in the 11th spot, bettering his previous season best finish of 12th(although that was in the Lits class).

In the Lites class, East coast champion Christophe Pourcel would edge out the West coast champ Ryan Dungey for the Lites East -vs- West win.  Early leader Trey Canard would end up in 3rd place.
In the 450s, Ryan Villopoto would take over the lead from James Stewart and not look back.  He would take the win here in Vegas, but the battle was behind him between James Stewart and Chad Reed.  Reed would catch Stewart and proceed to run Stewart wide all the way to the tough blocks on the fast sweeper outside of the stadium.  Stewart would bobble and just about crash but would hold on to the 3rd position.  With the 3rd position, James Stewart would take the 2009 AMA Supercross championship over Chad Reed. It ws a hard fought battle, but in the end James Stewart came out on top.

The 2009 AMA supercross season finished off with a bang here in Vegas.  As the teams work to pack up and celebrate the end of the long season, the BBMX team takes a two week long vacation before the Outdoor season starts up at Glen Helen memorial day weekend.

Remember, keep it pinned and grab the holeshot!

Ben Lamay on his way to 9th place in heat one.

Salt Lake City, Utah- For the first time in five years, the AMA Supercross series came to Salt Lake City and the DNA Energy Drink/BTO
Sports.com/BBMX supercross team shook the city to its core with their riding and PR skills. Then we were out of breath almost immediately from being 5400 feet above sea level. Our riders Jason Thomas and Kyle Keylon in the 450’s and Ben Lamay in the 250’s thrilled men, women and children with their racing exploits but only Lamay was able to transfer to the main event later on in the night. We’d like to be able to say that our 450 guys qualified good but had some bad luck but that wouldn’t be right. With the heavy rains that fell during the day, the decision was made to only have one practices and our guys were hurt by that. In the heat races, JT$ was in a bad gate and just spun in the mud which made him pretty much the last guy going into the first turn. Kyle’s starts weren’t any better. The LCQ saw an improved JT but that’s not worth very much right? However, our new recruit Lamay shone in his heat race as he came from the back on his WMI tuned machine to transfer right out of the heat and into the main. Ben’s a great kid and has adapted well to the CRF 250, he keeps yelling “mush, mush” when he’s out there but we’re attributing that to his Alaskan upbringing. Ben would eventually race hard to a seventeenth in the main event.

Whenever someone mentions the Las Vegas Supercross finale, we always seem to end up talking about Doug Henry's historic win there. After an injury sidelined Doug for several rounds in 1997, he returned to action in Las Vegas aboard a very special Yamaha prototype: the white YZ400M, the four-stroke the company was about to bet big on.

Amazingly, Henry won that night on the hard-packed Vegas clay, and in doing so became the catalyst of the four-stroke revolution. No professional AMA Supercross race had ever been won by a rider on a four-stroke before Henry came along, and it was a snapshot of the future. Twelve years have passed since that night, and this Saturday evening every single rider on the track will have the aide of valves and cams.

So who better to preview our final Smith Optics Track Walk, than the legendary Doug Henry? We’ll pick things up just after the starting line and “Thunder Alley.”
